A Nurse's Reminder: Life is a Gift
My shift at the bedside yesterday reminded me that being alive and able to interact with those we love is truly a gift. A gift that can be taken away at any moment, or one that we can choose to stop recognizing as a gift and remove ourselves from it with one simple action.
We are not always aware of what we mean to those who love us. Our challenges may become overwhelming and literally suck our life from within, so much so that in one moment of emptiness an action can be taken that devastates our loved ones forever. I could not do enough to comfort three young, tearful children as the answers to their simple questions about their mom were not what they desperately hoped to hear. Their lives will be changed forever, three children and a father learning to live with the decision of his wife and their mother.
Then, as my shift ended and I was leaving the unit, I crossed paths with the family of another patient. They were wheeling their feeble father into the unit to say goodbye to his wife of many decades. He was the one who had been ill for so long and had needed her to care for him. He was supposed to go first, not his dear caretaker. She had kept secret a simple sore that eventually required her to be admitted to the hospital, from where she will end up departing this life. Her son recognized me as I approached, even though I was disguised in my cycling gear, and we embraced, as I knew this would most likely be the last time I would see him. He continued on his way, through the hallways of the ICU, he and his only brother, pushing their father towards an experience that did not seem possible one week earlier.
And I, their nurse, thoughtfully made my way home, where I could finally allow the emotions of my day to settle and realize some relief as I received my awaiting hug, full of love. Never pass by an opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings with those you love; one day it will be your last opportunity to have done so. Live with no regrets.

Cabin Sledding in December
The accomplishment of this years Jones sledding day was Mazzy, Luci, Sierra and Brooklyn learning to "board" on the flat sleds. They were awesome!!! Bodie gave it a good effort, but his football body made it hard for him to stay on his feet and so he kept trying and trying. Coach Greg was on the sidelines providing helpful input.
Josh and Chelsea had so much fun, both on their own and together on the tube behind the snowmobile.
Kyle had to pull himself out from under the big pine tree, but he had a smile the whole time!
The parents even got in on the fun!!!
There were smiles everywhere and we were very thankful for the gift of fresh snow. As the day went on, some new sledding trails were discovered.
Leah, the youngest, showed she had some serious sledding skills and had the smile to go along with her confidence.
Bodhi did spend some time upright and got some seriously fast sledding runs on the blue torpedo.
As the hours passed, we slowly made our way into the cabin and enjoyed the warm cozy company of family, in the winter, at the cabin. Until next year!!!!
